PiCED Tsunami Relief Effort - Rebuild our Schools!

Oct 13, 2009

Faafetai lava—thank you.

If you’re reading this, you’ve either:

1) just donated money to our relief efforts here towards rebuilding schools in American Samoa

or

2) have taken the time to visit our blog and will most likely donate after you’ve read the rest of this blog post smile

If you’ve donated, please note that 100%* of the money you’ve given will go towards our Rebuild-the-Schools Fund.

• replenishing books, school and office supplies
• infrastructure repairs
• general reconstruction costs

...for the following schools that were destroy in American Samoa —

1. Taputapu Elementary in Poloa
2. Matatula in Tula
3. Fagasa Elementary
4. Masefau Elementary
5. Afono Elementary

As funds come in and so that transparency is ensured, we will post actual screenshots here on our blog of our Paypal account in real-time each week. We will also report on any purchases and actual distributions to each of these schools as they occur. Check back for those updates.

PiCED Executive Director Sandra King Young also announced a partnership with well-known U.S. personal trainer, Val Fujii, the Folsom-based owner of Superwomen Boot Camp. Fujii has teamed up with Matt Sgro of Boot Camps With a Purpose to form “Superwomen Give Back: A Boot Camp Benefiting the Children of American Samoa”, a charity that has been set-up to raise funds for the recent tsunami disaster in American Samoa.

“Countless people have lost members of their family in this great tragedy and I wanted to find a way to help the people of American Samoa while at the same time giving back to my local community,” Fujii says.  Fujii goes on to say, “Next Saturday, October 24th, we will hold a special boot camp open to the public with 100% of the proceeds going to provide school supplies to the children of American Samoa who lost their schools.”

Fujii was a contact and friend of local girl and personal trainer herself, Monique Solofa. To take part in the charity boot camp, Folsom, CA-area participants need only bring a school supply or a tax-deductible donation of $15 or more to the boot camp.  Fujii’s organization and partners are handling transport of all donations to American Samoa.  Those unable to attend the boot camp or who prefer to donate online, can click here to donate towards rebuilding American Samoa’s schools.

I’d like to go back to school to get a degree to teach pre-school. Colleges have classes listed as early childhood education classes and some colleges have classes labeled child development classes. Are these interchangeable and mean the same thing? Is ECE what I want? I will go in and talk to counselors, but just thought maybe someone out there could know. Thanks.

My theory on why Japan is so advanced technologically is because after the atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima Japanese people were alerted that other countries had technology to develop weapons that destroy entire cities and decided push their education harder to move ahead technologically as a knee jerk response for survival.
