Fundraising Update 4/23/10 - Tennis Fundraiser + Itunes Charity Single = Rebuild!

Apr 23, 2010

Our fundraising drive to Rebuild the Schools in American Samoa, specifically, the Taputapu Parent Center in Poloa Village, continues this weekend with our good friend Val Fujii and his crew’s efforts up in NorCal.

Click here to read Val’s blog about a Tennis Fundraiser he’s organized with friends and clients, as well as a heartfelt account of growing up in American Samoa, his love for the islands, and what motivates him to this day to give back. Val was instrumental early-on in spreading awareness about the need for help with some other fitness-themed fundraisers last fall in the aftermath of the tsunami. If you’re in the Folsom, CA area, definitely stop by this Saturday, April 24 and next Saturday, May 1st to participate, to give, and to be a part of a wonderful event.

We’ve also launched another fundraiser in the form of a charity single, “Teardrop from God,” which is now available for purchase on Itunes. Visit TeardropFromGod.com to read the moving story of how over 50 Polynesian artists and community activists banded together in December 2009 to record a song to raise money for the victims of the tsunami in both Samoas. Go here to purchase the single on Itunes! Please spread the word about these fundraisers! The rebuilding is only just beginning, and we need all the help we can get!

Our initial goal is to raise $8,000 to rebuild the Taputapu Parent Center in the village of Poloa. What is a Parent Center? Parent Centers were originally founded through President Bush’s education initiative, “No Child Left Behind,” and the idea was to provide parents a central location on-campus in order to increase their role in their children’s lives academically and socially. PiCED has operated several Parent Centers in American Samoa for the last 4 years, and we’ve had a lot of success offering parents computer training, technology training, and helping them develop the kinds of “soft skills” (eg. interview skills, resume, etc.) that are required in the new economy.

So keep spreading the word, we need your help! Between Val Fujii’s efforts, direct donations off our website, and our partner location in Carson, we’ve raised almost $2,000 so far, but we’re still short of our goal of $8,000....keep on keepin on!

Hi,
Education in the largest sense is any act or experience that has a formative effect on the mind, character or physical ability of an individual. In its technical sense, education is the process by which society deliberately transmits its accumulated knowledge, skills and values from one generation to another.
Etymologically the word education contains educare (Latin) “bring up”, which is related to educere “bring out”, “bring forth what is within”, “bring out potential” and ducere, “to lead”.Teachers in educational institutions direct the education of students and might draw on many subjects, including reading, writing, mathematics, science and history. This process is sometimes called schooling when referring to the education of teaching only a certain subject, usually as professors at institutions of higher learning. There is also education in fields for those who want specific vocational skills, such as those required to be a pilot. In addition there is an array of education possible at the informal level, such as in museums and libraries, with the Internet and in life experience.
